Mausumi Chatterjee's Duty

"In this culture, family always comes first."

my mother performed her duty well
making certain I understood mine

self-dependence is a worthy goal
only if it does not sacrifice the family

At university I learned how to be an adult
At my mother's feet I learned how to be a woman

we must learn to compromise
because we will need to do it more often
why compare ourselves to men?
we are women

I have learned to be contented
speaking out when I am not
I know I can take care of myself
choosing instead to care for my family

God has given me many gifts
among them
the husband for whom I compromise
the son for whom I live

  1. My first impression of this short brief poem, is Mausumi relates to Lakshmi the main character in the book Sold.Mausumi's mother has taught her to be self-dependent and to get ready for reality as being a woman. Many people around America will consider Lakshmi & Mausumi's mother as not being a good mother. A mother who doesn't have the characteristics or traits of being a good mother. But, I personally feel that they are being a good mother if they weren't, they will definitely not take time out & tell their children what the expectations are in order for them to follow and practice their culture. Many women must be accustomed! One quote that has stood out to me the most is "God has given me many gifts". But , Mausumi has explained that she has to compomise and take-care of her husband and son. I BELIEVE MAUSUMI AND LAKSHMI NEVER HAVE TIME TO EMBRACE THEIR TALENTS AND TAKE-TIME OUT AND FOCUS ON THEMSELVES.

  2. My impression is that this woman has decided to go about her life the way she has been since she was a little girl. I feel that she does not care for equality, nor wether or not she can support herself. That is because she believes she can support herself, so now she shall support her family so she can please her husband and help her children grow up into successful adults. That's a very admirable quality, to be able to be so selfless for the sake of your family is a very unique thing in people. Especially people west, who compared to Nepalese women, seem to be spoiled. I believe we can all learn something from this woman. She must be a very strong person to be able to be happy with the life she has now. It appears that all she needs to keep herself happy is her family, and that is something truly respectful. I don't know any women in my life that are like her, but if I did, I would give them the upmost respect and admiration for their views on life.

  3. I got the impression that Mausummi is content with the life she has and her family is very important to her. I think she accepts her life as a woman and doesn't see it as unfair when compared to a man's life. She is a woman that is proud of her role in her family. She take pride in being a good wife and mother. She reminds me of my grandma from my mom's side because she values her family very much just like my grandma.

  4. My impression for this that there family is important to them and there family comes first for them. And also they had understand and accepted there life with their children and husband. I think this lady sounds like mother's these days well in prospective my mom because that's what all mother's do today. An example is my mom beacsue she only pays attention to my brothers and my dad. And she doesnt even have time for her self. And sometimes I feel sad for my mom beacause she bearly has time for her self. Why does life have to be so difficult and Parents should have time for themself not only the family.

  6. I think that this women cares for her family. My impression of her is that she enjoys caring for her family. I think that she is happy in her life because taking care of her family is what she loves to do best. She believes that family always comes first and I believes that she also thinks that without out her, the family would not function like it would if she was there. I was surprised when I saw that she went to college because usually in this part of the world, women can't go to school. She thinks that women shouldn't compare themselves to men because women are not like men.
